The challenges that young women face in today's society are astounding. In this day in age, girls maintain a more negative body image, experience higher levels of anxiety and depression, and are at a greater risk of attempting suicide than their male counterparts. Despite these facts, only 5.3% of foundation funding nationally goes to programs for girls and women. With this in mind, Assist Her, Inc. and Self-Evident, Inc. was formed to rejuvenate the minds of young women with knowledge and encouragement.
Self-Evident, Inc is an apparel company that aims to provide uplifting and positive apparel as opposed to some of the derogatory clothing young women wear today. While promoting a positive message, our fashion is still chic, sassy, and fun to wear! Self-Evident debuted its ladies line of Empowerment Apparel at the Expo for Today's Black Woman (McCormick Place Chicago) in March 2006. Since then, the company has been participating in various events in the Chicagoland area and abroad such as The Chicago Social Forum, International Festival of Life, GenArt Shop CHICago, Pantene Total You Tour, and MANY MORE.
Not just any apparel company, Self-Evident implements a 12-week, co-ed Youth Fashion Program entitled S.T.Y.L.E. (Spotlight on Talent through Youth-Led Entertainment) in community schools. In the spirit of Empowerment, Self-Evident also donates 10% of its profits toward affiliate company Assist Her, Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides Prevention, Literacy, and Mentoring Programs for girls.
The G.U.R.L. (Getting Us Ready for Life) Project is the leading initiave for Assist Her, Inc. It is a 15-week program offered to local schools, churches, and agencies with a focus on teaching young ladies about self-esteem and body image, etiquette, financial planning, etc.
Assist Her, Inc. also provides college tuition assistance to the young ladies involved in The G.U.R.L. Project through their participation in Self-Evident, Inc.’s “CollegiaTee” Contest. Each young lady is given the opportunity to devise a positive girl/woman-related slogan or graphic. The best slogan/graphic is chosen and printed on t-shirts for 1 year. All of the profits derived from the sale of the shirts goes toward that girl’s college tuition fund. All funds are held until it has been verified by Self-Evident, Inc. that the girl has been accepted and enrolled into a community college, university, trade school, etc.
Both companies have been recognized by Fox News in the Morning, Ebony Magazine, Pine Sol, Time Out Chicago, Rolling Out Magazine, etc. Self-Evident and Assist Her are pushing a movement of Empowerment for girls and women. Combined, both companies are working on being a powerful force within the community.
